Materials in Sword & Shield Simulator
Fuel, bars, timber, and salvage — the inputs the furnace actually understands.
Materials are the unglamorous half of Sword & Shield Simulator. The designer gets the screenshots. The furnace gets the hours. This page names the inputs that official copy and devlogs actually use, then tells you how they fail in Early Access. Pair it with How to Get Materials, How to Forge, and the cart priority tool.
Coal
Coal is furnace fuel. No coal, no honest heat. Buy it only when a vein is dry. Do not spend the last stack on a decorative run while a contract waits. If the furnace animation plays and nothing smelts, you may have a ghost input, not an empty coal bin. See Performance and Bugs.
Iron ore and iron bars
Iron is the default metal for weapons and tools. Mine it. Smelt it. Practice on it. Almost every sword parts experiment should start here. Iron is also what battlefield scrap wants to become. If a haul of helmets becomes two bars, that is weight talking, not a hidden iron tax.
Cupronickel
Named in a gathering devlog as a rare metal for alloys with different hardness and flexibility. Treat it like a spice. One mixed blade you keep is better than five grey experiments. Traders may sell it at a premium. Mining it yourself is the point of leaving Danburg.
Wood
Marked trees, axe, cart. Shields, handles, tools, and everyday ironwork all nibble timber. Chop designated trees. You do not need a lumber mill fantasy. You need enough boards for the next shield and enough handle blanks for the next contract.
Battlefield scrap
Helmets, armour, broken swords. The romance of the setting. The smelter does not care about romance. It cares about mass. Dense broken blades and thick plates beat a cart of thin hats. Help the wounded or rob the field — the store page offers both tones — but the cart still has a volume limit.
Scrap that falls out of the wagon and disappears is a bug. Scrap that sits on the smelter and cannot be clicked is a bug. Do not design a production line around either.
Mixing
Forge updates described interactive mixing for blade stats. That is the advanced furnace, not a separate crafting skill tree. Mix on purpose toward a contract. Random sludge wastes cupronickel and time. If mixing UI misses clicks, it is the same pointer problem as the rest of the game.
What is not a material
Finished swords are not ore. Do not smelt a travel-gate blade because the inventory is messy. Quest items are not coal. Male deer are not a reliable resource in the current build. Reputation points are a placeholder, not a bar you smelt.
When the roadmap adds a deeper mine and more mixtures, this list will grow. Until then, four honest inputs run the shop: coal, iron, wood, and whatever dense scrap the field gives you. Everything else is a luxury or a bug. Keep the Items Hub open if you forget which pile a thing belongs to, and go back to the anvil before the coal burns down to spite.
A note on “best materials” lists
This is not a PvP tier list. Iron is not D-tier because it is common. Iron is the metal you should spend the most hours on. Cupronickel is not S-tier because it is rare. It is a spice. Wood is not filler; shields fail without it. Coal is not optional flavour; it is the difference between a furnace and a cold decoration. If a streamer ranks bars like gacha pets, close the tab and look at your contract. The forge checklist cares whether the bar exists. It does not care about a colour chart. Sibling pages sword parts and shields spend these inputs. This page only names them so you stop melting the wrong pile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What should I always keep in stock?
Coal and iron. Wood next. Cupronickel only when you have a keeper blade in mind.
Does scrap type matter?
Weight matters more than collecting one of every helmet. Dense metal in, thin junk out.
Can I skip mining and only salvage?
You can try. Salvage is inconsistent and bug-prone. A pickaxe is the stable income.
Where do I store bars safely?
Smelt, then use them. Long raw piles are where ghost meshes appear. Save before unique melts.
