How to Travel Regions in Sword & Shield Simulator
Shrines, carts, and the Early Access gates that reviews say the tutorial never explains.
The current Early Access map is three regions: Danburg, Bloodlands, and Grainmill. Fast-travel shrines exist. A cart exists. A siege tower exists on the feature list. What does not exist, at least in a clear tutorial, is a single official paragraph that says exactly how you unlock the next region. This page separates store-page facts from player reports so you do not dump five good swords into a shrine because a wiki sounded sure.
Pair it with the Map Hub, Danburg, Bloodlands, Grainmill, and planned Talstein. If the cart will not physically move, also open Performance and Bugs. The Day One Patch (1.0.26.08.12.3) added quest markers on Bloodlands and Grainmill and reworked the in-game map view. That does not magically unstick a battlefield cart, but it does mean the marker you follow should finally exist on those two maps.
What is confirmed
Wildlands Interactive says the playable Early Access slice includes those three regions with interiors, exteriors, over 140 story missions, side quests, collectibles, and fast-travel shrines. Talstein is the large region planned after Early Access, with dozens more missions and landmarks. You should not expect Talstein as a finished chapter today. See the roadmap.
You haul goods with a cart. You can repair cart and siege equipment. You can get stuck in prison for clumsy lockpicking, which is a travel problem of a different kind: you are not going to Grainmill from a cell.
What players report (unconfirmed as design)
A detailed Steam review said travel to another region required crafting five level-10 weapons and five armour pieces and trading them in, and that the cost was not a one-time unlock. If that is true in your build, it is the most important economy sink in the game. We label it player-reported because it is not on the store page. Check the in-game prompt before you copy the recipe.
If it is true, do not sell your high-grade set. The sword designer and shields pages become travel tools, not fashion. If it is false in a later patch, you only lost time making good gear — which you needed anyway.
Other reviews simply could not leave the battlefield toward Grainmill at all. That is a bug, not a hidden tribute. Reload. Do not craft five more swords into a broken flag.
Practical travel loop
- Finish a stable forge loop in Danburg so you can replace a lost blade. Getting Started and How to Forge first.
- Find the shrine or gate the quest names. Read the UI. Screenshot it. The wiki cannot see your patch.
- If the UI asks for a trade, pay with pieces you can remake. Keep one spare masterpiece.
- Save in the new region before you smelt anything unique.
- Use shrines to return only after you understand whether return trips cost again.
Drive the cart like the wheels are made of glass. Reported phantom wheel damage will strand you between towns faster than any gate.
Fast travel versus story travel
Shrines are for repeating a route you already earned. They are not a skip for Bloodlands if the story still wants a battlefield beat. If a marker points through an unloaded gate, walk to the named NPC in Danburg instead of the fog wall. Citizens hand out contracts and rumours; they also steer the Richard story. Talking is cheaper than clipping.
When Talstein lands, this page will add its towns and the bastion. Until then, three regions is the whole honest map — see Talstein for what is promised versus what Steam lists. If a YouTuber shows a fourth, check the date. Demo and prologue builds are not the 11 August 2026 Early Access slice.
Travel is how the forge stays fed. New woods, new scrap, new contracts. It is also how saves die. Make the blade, make the save, then take the road. The Updates Hub is where we will note if a patch finally writes the gate cost in plain language.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many regions are playable now?
Three in the current Early Access description: Danburg, Bloodlands, and Grainmill. Talstein is planned.
Do I have to pay every time I travel?
One review said the weapon-and-armour trade repeats. That is player-reported. Read the in-game prompt on your patch.
The quest says Grainmill but I cannot move. What now?
Treat it as a stuck-world bug. Reload an earlier save and see Performance and Bugs. Do not keep paying a silent gate.
Are shrines unlocked from the start?
Fast-travel shrines are a listed feature. They do not replace story gates. Earn the route, then use the shrine.
